Frequently Asked Questions
How long does aligner treatment take?
The length of aligner treatment varies depending on the complexity of your case, but on average, it takes 12 to 18 months. For minor adjustments, treatment may be as short as 6 months, while more complex cases may require up to 24 months. Your dentist will provide a personalized treatment plan, and the duration will also depend on how consistently you wear the aligners—typically, they should be worn for 20-22 hours per day for optimal results. Regular check-ins with your dentist will ensure your progress stays on track.
How often do I have to see the dentist?
Generally, for aligner treatment, you’ll need to visit the dentist every 8-10 weeks for progress checks and adjustments. These appointments allow your dentist to monitor your progress and provide new sets of aligners. If you experience any issues, such as broken attachments or lost aligners, contact us as soon as possible to schedule an appointment and ensure your treatment stays on track.
What happens after the aligner treatment?
After completing your aligner treatment, it’s crucial to maintain your newly straightened teeth. You will receive one set of clear removable retainers as part of your treatment, which should be worn every night to prevent your teeth from relapsing. If an extra fixed retainer is necessary, your dentist will advise you, but please note that a fixed wire will incur an additional cost.
Retainers may need to be replaced if they become worn or broken, so it’s important to take care of them. Regular follow-up appointments are also essential to check your bite and ensure your teeth remain properly aligned.
How Do I Care for My Aligners?
Proper care for your aligners is essential to ensure they stay clean, clear, and effective throughout your treatment. Following a few simple guidelines will help maintain their condition and prevent damage
Proper Oral Hygiene
- Mild discomfort from aligners is normal and should settle within 3-4 days. Use Panadol or Neurofen if needed.
- Remove aligners for eating and drinking.
- Brush your teeth after every meal—carry a travel toothbrush.
- Use high-fluoride toothpaste (e.g., Colgate Neutrafluor 5000 Sensitive) once daily to prevent decay.
- Floss or use interdental brushes, and occasionally use disclosing tablets to track plaque.
- Clean aligners with a brush and toothpaste or soap before each use—avoid chemicals or denture cleaners.
- Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings.
Dietary Instructions
- Eat anything, but clean your teeth before wearing aligners.
- Limit sugary foods and fizzy drinks.
Elastic Wear Instructions
- Wear elastics 24/7, except while eating or brushing, changing them 3 times a day.
- Request more elastics at your dental visits if needed.
- Store elastics in zip lock bags to prevent loss.
General Instructions
- Use a chewy or cotton roll to seat aligners properly in the initial days.
- Report lost aligners or broken attachments immediately.
- Keep aligners away from hot water and chemicals, and store them safely in the provided box.
Warnings
- Discontinue use and seek help if you experience an allergic reaction to the aligner material.
- Keep aligners out of reach of children and pets, and avoid swallowing or aspirating parts.
What Happens If I Lose or Damage an Aligner?
If you lose an aligner, it will incur a cost to replace it, so it’s important to keep them safe. If an aligner is damaged, your dentist will assess the situation to determine if you can continue treatment with the next aligner. Always follow the care instructions provided to prevent damage and avoid delays in your treatment.
