Assesment

First,  the dentist will thoroughly examine the patient’s teeth and gums to evaluate the level of cleaning required. The periodontal condition is carefully documented, and X-ray records are taken to aid in the assessment.

Deep Scaling

Using the peizo ultrasonic scaler  plaque and tartar is gently removed from the surfaces of the teeth, especially around the gum line and in between teeth. This process may be repeated at 3 months for moderate to  severe periodontitis cases to ensure optimal elimination of calculus.

Polishing

Teeth are polished to remove any remaining biofilm and make surfaces smooth and stain free. A slurry of fine pumice and prophylaxis paste is often used for this purpose.

Fluoride Treatment

In high caries risk cases such as surface demineralisation , a high concentrated  fluoride foam is applied to strengthen the teeth and prevent cavities. This is especially common for children but may also be recommended for adults with a high risk of cavities.

Desensitizing

A unique desensitizing solution is applied to the exposed root surfaces near the gums in adults with sensitive teeth, forming a thin barrier that gradually reduces sensitivity.

Home Care Tips

Brush twice daily, preferably before bedtime and after breakfast. Floss regularly  and rinse daily with alcohol-free mouthwash. It’s advisable to steer clear of sugary foods and limit consumption of fizzy drinks to maintain oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of professional dental cleanings compared to at-home oral care?

Professional dental cleanings offer several advantages over at-home oral care routines. While home care plays a crucial role, it compliments the deeper cleaning provided by dental clinics. Regular cleans not only help detect oral health issues early but also allow dentists to remove tartar buildup, particularly beneath the gums, effectively eliminating harmful bacteria. This comprehensive approach ensures a healthier mouth and a brighter smile for the long term.

Will I experience any pain or discomfort ?

It is common to experience some mild sensitivity or discomfort after a dental cleaning, especially if tartar buildup was significant or if you have sensitive gums. This discomfort typically subsides within a day or two. Over-the-counter pain relievers and desensitizing toothpaste can help alleviate any temporary discomfort. We usually provide you with a tube of desensitizing gel to be applied at home. If you experience persistent pain or discomfort, please call us and we will book an appointment to evaluate further.

What is the proper way to brush and floss teeth

To brush effectively, use a circular motion with an electric toothbrush and high fluoride toothpaste, ensuring to brush after breakfast and before bed. It’s important to monitor brushing for children up to six years of age. For flossing, use flossettes for easy maneuvering and make it a regular habit. Our dental nurse will demonstrate proper brushing techniques to young kids using models to ensure they understand how to maintain good oral hygiene.

Are there any foods or activities I should avoid

For optimal oral health, it’s best to avoid frequent consumption of sugary snacks and beverages, as they can contribute to tooth decay. Acidic foods and drinks, like citrus fruits and carbonated beverages, can also erode tooth enamel over time. Additionally, activities such as smoking can increase the risk of gum disease and tooth discoloration. Our dental nurse will demonstrate proper brushing techniques to young kids using models to ensure they understand how to maintain good oral hygiene.
